True grit from Oram against India

Jacob Oram, whose performance with the bat and ball led New Zealand to victory in the first one-day international against India on Thursday, said he was pleased with the grit he showed during the match.

Man-of-the-match Oram took five for 26 and then hit a steady 27 not out as New Zealand won the match by three wickets.

It was Oram who guided New Zealand home in the second Test in Hamilton last Sunday and he told reporters he took a lot of heart from that innings after failing in his debut test in Wellington.

"It wasn't pretty out there but it was the fact that I wanted to stay there," Oram said.

"It's a little bit of grit that I don't think I've shown in the past, so I want to continue it and keep the mental approach to the game going.

"I'm really enjoying it. It's not my natural game not to hit fours or going for sixes and holing out on the boundary and just picking up ones or twos.

"It's

a different side of my game that I haven't really touched on, but now I am I am loving it."

Oram (27) was joined by Kyle Mills (21) and then Daniel Vettori (5no) in rescuing the New Zealand cause after Javagal Srinath and Ashish Nehra had reduced them to 52 for six in the 19th over chasing India's total of 108.

The 24-year-old, a handy football goalkeeper in his school days before he chose cricket as his main sport, said he had faith in the New Zealand tail.

"I knew Kyle [Mills] could bat because he bats five or six for Auckland and I was glad we could get a partnership going," Oram said.

With his bowling, Oram said when he took his fifth wicket, some of the team reminded him that Scott Styris -- dropped for the first two matches of this series -- had taken a New Zealand record of six for 25 in the West Indies in June.

"They wanted me to topple it, but I couldn't, so Scotty can hold the record. I'm quite happy with my own little record."
