Nalini, who is serving a life term in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Tuesday ended her two-day long indefinite fast demanding her premature release, after Vellore jail officials assured that her plea would be considered as per law. Nalini broke her fast today morning after the prison officials prevailed upon her to do so and assured her that her plea would be considered as per law, according to jail authorities.

The government constituted board, headed by District Collector C Rajendran, had met for over three hours on Wednesday and heard Nalini on her plea at the Vellore women's prison, where she is lodged. The meeting went on till late in the night.

Nalini, one of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on Wednesday moved the Madras High Court, seeking her early release from prison. The petition was filed by one of Nalini's counsels and it is likely to be taken up for hearing today evening by Justice Jothimani. In her petition, she contended that since her death sentence was commuted to life, she had already served 17 years in prison. The life sentence was only up to 14 years.
