Maulvi Hussain Umarji, the cleric who was branded as the key conspirator of the 2002 Sabarmati Express carnage but was later acquitted, died in Godhra after a prolonged illness, his family said on Monday. Umarji, 65, who had been bed-ridden since his acquittal in February 2011, passed away on Sunday night.
Sixty-three people, including the main accused Maulvi Hussain Umarji, acquitted in the 2002 Godhra train burning case, on Wednesday reached their hometown in Gujarat after spending almost eight years in prison.
Maulvi Hussain Umarji's son was jubilant over his father being acquitted in the Godhra case. "From the very beginning, due to faulty investigation of the agencies, my old father was confined to prison for eight long years. I think a big injustice was done to us," Saeed Umarji, son of Syed Hassan Umarji, said.
Maulana Hussain Umarji was arrested at Signal Falia near the Godhra railway station.
The religious leader and cleric from Godhra is the main accused in the Godhra train carnage.
POTA Judge Sonia Gokani passed the order, as the special investigating team did not seek further police remand.
A railway mobile court at Godhra has further remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days.
