The government has agreed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee's recommendation against treating 16 years as the age of consent for girls and classifying sexual acts with children aged 16 to 18 years as consensual. Such acts, feels the committee, should be treated as offences.
The National Commission for Women has received 86,364 complaints since 2007 and action was taken against in around 20,000 cases, the government told the Rajya Sabha on Friday, adding that the commission is dealing with the backlog on priority.
Over 570 cases of rape, including 319 from Uttar Pradesh, have been reported to the National Commission for Women till December this year, Minister for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said on Wednesday.
