Despite the unusually chilly weather, the 10,071 participants in 225 cities and towns in 40 states warmed themselves during this two-week Yogathon with 984,481 repetitions of the yoga routine. Participating organisations included 17 public schools, 25 universities, 14 yoga schools, and many temples.
The program that began on Makar Sankranti--January 16--saw 1,194 participants performing 39,173 Surya Namaskars at 55 places in the first five hours. The Yogathon involves a nationwide HSS effort to create awareness about yoga and its advantages. The HSS encourages its members and others at its 140 centers to perform 10 lakh Surya Namaskars.

The UN will commemorate the inaugural International Yoga Day on June 21 with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
A resolution has been tabled in the New York City Council to recognise June 21 as 'World Yoga Day' in New York in line with the United Nations' decision to commemorate the day annually.
