West Bengal Police are investigating the murder of a close aide to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, Chandranath Rath, who was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district. The police are examining CCTV footage, have formed multiple teams to trace the assailants, and are probing whether contract killers were involved.
Launching their final offensive to reclaim the areas held by the Maoists in West Midnapore district, security forces started marching towards Kantapahari -- the last stronghold of the Maoists -- from both Lalgarh and Ramgarh on Monday.The forces, comprising 1600 men of the Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, State Armed Police and India Reserve Battalion, set out at approximately 7 am from Lalgarh and Ramgarh in a pincer movement.
Jayanta Sarkar (52) had allegedly abused and slapped a little girl after a row over fetching water from a tap on Thursday evening, deputy inspector general of police, Presidency Range, Siddhinath Gupta said. Enraged over the incident, locals beat up Sarkar with lathis and iron bars, following which he died on Friday
West Bengal police sub-inspector Amitabha Mullick was shot dead and four police personnel were severely injured after supporters of the Gorkha Janmukti Morch loyal to Gurung opened fire to stop the advancing police party.
However, no fresh incident of violence was reported from the area since Wednesday night, the police said adding that the situation was 'under control'.
