Watching movies on direct-to-home has become cheaper, with two major DTH operators, Airtel DTH and Big TV, slashing pay-per-view (PPV) prices of premiere (new) movies. While Airtel DTH has reduced prices of paid movie services by 33 per cent, Big TV has cut prices by around 50 per cent.

State-owned broadcaster Prasar Bharti is believed to have issued a show cause notice to private news channels for 'unauthorised' usage of its Olympic footage while asking them to pay for the same. Sources in the know of the development said that, in a strongly-worded letter, Prasar Bharti asked news channels to either stop using its Olympics footage or pay for it.

With Doordarshan opting out of the simultaneous coverage of the India-South Africa three-test match series, sports channel Neo Sports the exclusive telecast rights holder for the series hopes to rake in Rs 70 crore in advertising revenue. Neo Sports has eight on-air sponsors (two co-sponsors and six associate sponsors). Coca-Cola, Airtel, Hero Honda, Pidilite and Asian Paints are putting about Rs 26-28 crore, while the remaining amount will come from spot selling.

With most private television channels deserting it, DD Direct Plus, the direct-to-home (DTH) company from Prasar Bharati, has become a true pubcaster carrying 34 channels of which 31 are from Doordarshan.These 31 DD-channels include 19 television channels and 12 All India Radio channels. The private channels that were recently disconnected from DD Direct Plus include Aaj Tak, Headlines Today, BBC World, Star Utsav and Akash Bangla, sources said.
