Bevan, who will take up his appointment in November 2011, has studied Social Anthropology at Sussex University before joining the Foreign Office in 1982 and has served in a number of bilateral and multilateral missions overseas.
He will take up his new appointment in September, it was officially announced in London on Wednesday.
At least nine foreigners, including a woman, were killed and 18 injured when heavily-armed terrorists attacked two luxury hotels and other public places in Mumbai in one of the worst terror strikes in the country.
The invitation was extended by Sir Richard Stagg when he called on Mamata Banerjee at the Rail Bhawan on Thursday.
Britan on Friday said there is clear evidence that the Mumbai terror attacks have links to Pakistan-based outfits. Islamabad has been asked to take effective and appropriate measures against the organisations, British High Commissioner to India Sir Richard Stagg said in Chennai. "We take the view that there is clear evidence that the attacks in Mumbai have links to organisations in Pakistan and we have been urging the Govt of Pakistan to take effective measures," he said.
Britain on Tuesday said that pressure applied on Pakistan to take action against terrorists involved in the Mumbai attacks has not worked as it would have liked. "We have been putting consistent pressure on Pakistan, over the weeks since the attacks happened in Mumbai, to take actions against those who we believe are behind them. We believe that the pressure has not passed as we would have liked," British High Commissioner to India Sir Richard Stagg said.
