As the President has been repeatedly informed about the 'gross violations of human rights' in Manipur, the student communities were expecting some action from him, they added.
'Students cannot sit calmly in classrooms and study in the prevailing situation,' a joint statement issued by various student bodies said.
Markets, shops, business establishments remained closed, reports said.
The student body's leader L Joykumar said it could cause demographic and social changes in the small state.
Students' organisations and political parties are participating in the bandh to protest the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution there.
