Olympics may be mistake: Greek minister

May 28, 2004 10:52 IST

Greece may have made a mistake in taking on this summer's Athens Olympics, Public Works Minister George Souflias said on Thursday, according to the Financial Times newspaper.

Spiralling security and construction costs have hurt the government's finances, while builders are still working flat out to complete some of the venues and infrastructure projects.

"I have to question whether our country should have undertaken the organisation of the Games," Souflias, a former national economy minister, was quoted as telling a parliamentary committee.

The Athens Olympics open on August 13.
