Madiba, as the late Nelson Mandela was affectionately known around the world, had a strong India connection.

After his release in prison, where he spent nearly 25 years for his anti-apartheid efforts, Mandela often visited India and invited Indian dignitaries to South Africa.

As a strong follower of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, he was awarded the International Gandhi Peace Price in 2001 for his peacemaking efforts by the Indian government.

He was the second foreign recipient of the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

Mandela even has a street named after him in national capital New Delhi.
