President A P J Abdul Kalam launched a special website for visually challenged people at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.

Nine students from the National Blind Association School in Delhi attended the inauguration.

Kalam said he was inspired to launch the website after he met two visually challenged people -- Deependra Manocha, who was unable to read his speeches on the official website and Asif Iqbal, who had to purchase an expensive software to check sites.

The President individually explained the system, called virtual vision, to the students.

Responding to a student's query about using a keyboard instead of a mouse as in the present system, Kalam said that he would ask the website designers to make changes.

The students were given special training for two days at the Rashtrapati Bhavan before the inauguration.

Kalam also promised to include a Hindi version of the website. Other languages would also be included soon, he said.

Through the website, students can access information on a variety of subjects including music and science.

Speaking to rediff.com the students lauded Kalam's effort. "We want to excel in life and this system would help us to do better than the others," a student said.
