In an attempt to check drive-by shootings by Maoist rebels, the Nepal government has banned pillion riding on motorcycles.

A notice issued by the home ministry said terrorists have misused motorcycles to launch attacks and "terrorists riding on the back on motorcycles have used weapons to attack."

Rebels have mounted increased attacks using motorcycles with pillion riders trained to fire weapons at security forces and government officials, it said.

"The

decision came after reports of increased incidents of shootings by pillion riders across the country in the past weeks," the home ministry said.

Security forces have been mobilised in an effective manner to maintain normalcy and protect lives and properties of the common people, the notice said.

Maoist rebels have stepped up violence in the country since King Gyanendra sacked the government and seized power in February.

Meanwhile, security forces have arrested five Maoists from Sanischare area of Itahari district in eastern Nepal.
