Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Ajit Jogi and his son Amit have served a legal notice to senior politician and arch-rival V C Shukla, alleging that the latter had entered into a conspiracy to register a false case against them.

The notice, which demands a public apology from Shukla within 15 days, alleges that the Jogis were falsely implicated in Nationalist Congress Party treasurer Ramavtar Jaggi's murder in June 2003 and that it had harmed their 'reputation and maligned their image.'

The CBI had named Amit as the main accused in the case. However, Raipur Sessions Judge B L Tidke acquitted him in the case.

The notice asked Shukla to publicly apologise for 'defaming and maligning the reputation' of the duo within two weeks of receiving it, sources close to Jogi told PTI in Raipur on Friday.

When contacted, Shukla said he was consulting his advocate on the matter.

"On behalf of my clients, I demand an unconditional public apology from you within two weeks of receipt of this notice, failing which I have been directed by my clients to initiate legal proceedings, both civil and criminal, at your own cost and risk," the notice dated June 10 said.

Shukla said he would approach a higher court soon to get remarks about him on the order sheet expunged and was consulting his advocate on this issue.

Shukla and Jogi were both in the Congress. The former left the party and headed the state unit of the NCP, in which late Jaggi, his close confidant, was the treasurer.

Shukla later joined the BJP and contested elections for the Mahasamund Lok Sabha seat, in which Jogi defeated him by a margin of over one lakh votes.
