Following is the chronology of railway accidents in India since 1985.

February 23, 1985: Fifty people burnt to death when two bogies of a passenger train caught fire near Rajnandgaon in Madhya Pradesh.

June 13, 1985: Thirty-eight people killed and about 50 injured as an express train collided with a goods train in Agra.

March 10, 1986: 50 people were killed and 200 injured as two trains collided at Khagaria in Bihar.

August 6, 1986: 52 people were killed and 35 injured as two coaches of an express train fall into a stream after colliding with a stationary goods train in Palamau district of Bihar.

July 8, 1987: Fifty-three people were killed when Dakshin Express derailed near Macherial in Andhra Pradesh.

July 8, 1988: 107 were killed when Island Express plunged into Ashtamudi lake in Kerala.

April 18,1988: At least 75 people were killed when Karnataka Express derailed near Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh.

November 1, 1988: 48 people were killed as Udyan Abha Toofan Express derailed at Sakaldiha in Bihar.

April 16, 1988: Seventy people were burnt alive as a shuttle train catches fire near Patna.

June 6, 1988: Thirty-six people were killed in a collision at Gollaguda in Andhra Pradesh.

June 25, 1988: 60 people were killed as a goods train rammed into a passenger train at Mangra in Daltongunj in Bihar.

October 10, 1988: Forty people were killed in a fire in a passenger train near Cherpalli in Andhra Pradesh.

October 31, 1991: Thirty people were killed as Karnataka Express derailed near Makaligurga in Karnataka.

September 5, 1992: 41 people were killed in a collision near Raigarh in Madhya Pradesh.

July 16, 1992: Sixty people were killed in a train mishap in Darbhan in Bihar.

September 21, 1993: 71 people killed as Kota-Bina passenger train collides with a goods train near Chhabra in Rajasthan.

May 3, 1994: 35 people killed as Narayanadri Express rams into a tractor in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh.

May 14, 1995: 52 people killed as Madras-Kanyakumari Express collides with a goods train near Salem in Tamil Nadu.

June 1, 1995: 73 people killed in two separate railway accidents in West Bengal and Orissa.

August 20, 1995: 400 people killed as Puroshottam Express, rams into Kalindi Express near Firozabad railway station in Uttar Pradesh.

April 18, 1996: 60 people killed as Gorakhpur-Gonda passenger train rams into a stationary goods train at
Domingarh near Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

May 14, 1996: 35 people killed as the bus carrying them collided with the Ernakulam-Kayamkulam train at an unmanned level-crossing near Alappuzha in Kerala.

May 25, 1996: 25 people killed as an Allahabad-bound passenger train rammed into a tractor-trolley at an unmanned level crossing near Varanasi.

July 28, 1997: 12 people were killed when Karnataka Express collided with Himsagar Express near Faridabad on the outskirts of New Delhi.

September 14, 1997: 81 people were killed when five bogies of Ahmedabad-Howrah express fell into a river in Bilaspur district of Madhya Pradesh.

June 22, 2001: Fifty-two people were killed when three coaches of Mangalore-Madras Mail tumbled into the Kadalundi river, near Kozhikode in Kerala.

August 23, 2001: 11 persons died after their tempo rammed into Ravi Express at an unmanned crossing.

August 16, 2001: 15 people, including eight women and two children were run over by a train while crossing a track in Maharashtra. They were hit after they got off train that halted briefly between stations in Jalgaon district.

September 9, 2002: 100 passengers were killed and 150 hurt when a bogie of Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express plunged into the Dhave river in Bihar's Aurangabad district.

January 5, 2002: 21 people killed and 41 injured when the Secunderabad-Manmad express train rammed into a stationary goods train at Ghatnandur station in Maharashtra.

March 23, 2002: Seven injured when 13 bogies of Lokmanya Tilak Superfast Express from Patna to Mumbai derailed near Narsinghpur in Madhya Pradesh.

May 15, 2003: Thirty eight people, including women and children, were killed and 13 injured when three coaches of Amritsar-bound Frontier Mail caught fire.

June 22, 2003: In the first major accident on Konkan Railway section, 53 people, including three children, were killed and 25 injured when the first three coaches and engine of the Karwar-Mumbai Central (904 up) Holiday Special train derailed after crossing Vaibhavwadi station in Sindhudurg district in Maharashtra.

July 2, 2003: A train engine and two adjoining coaches fell off a bridge in Warangal, killing at least 18 people in the train and in a fish market on the ground.
