Two militants and a trooper of the elite counter insurgency agency, the Rashtriya Rifles, were killed and two others wounded in a south Kashmir gunfight Tuesday morning.

The police said the troops of 53 RR and the Special Operations Group moved into Aglar village of south Kashmir Pulwama district on Tuesday morning following information that some militants were hiding in the village.

"As they tightened the cordon around Aglar, two hiding militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit started indiscriminate firing at the security forces," a senior police officer said.

"In the initial encounter, one soldier of the RR identified as Rajesh Chauhan was killed while two other soldiers sustained injuries. The injured were evacuated to hospital for treatment," he said.

"The fire was returned and a gun battle ensued," he added.

In the sustained gun battle between the security forces and hiding militants, two JeM militants including one Pakistan national identified as Waseem, reported to be the district commander of the outfit were gunned down.

Two AK-47 rifles were recovered from the encounter site, according to a police spokesman.
