Ten persons including eight militants and two army soldiers were killed and eight others wounded in three different incidents of gunfights in the north Kashmir border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara on Thursday.

Army troops on Thursday foiled an infiltration bid on the Line of Control in Uri sector of north Kashmir Baramulla district eliminating five intruders.

"Alert troops spotted a group of heavily armed intruders in the Uri sector on Thursday morning. The group of infiltrating militants was surrounded and challenged. A fierce gunfight ensued which resulted in the killing of five militants. One army soldier also lost his life. The operation is still continuing," said a senior police officer in Srinagar [Images].

In another incident, three fidayeens (suicide attackers) were killed when they were about to attack a heavily guarded army camp in north Kashmir's Kupwara border town on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the group of heavily armed militants, travelling in a vehicle, were surrounded and engaged in a gunfight that lasted for several hours at the end of which all the three suicide attackers were killed.

An army convoy, which was on its way from north Kashmir Handwara town to Kupwara, was ambushed by militants near Chottipur village, resulting in on the spot death of a trooper and injuries to eight others, including one civilian.

Three of the injured troopers are stated to be serious and have been airlifted to army base hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment.
