At least 16 Army troopers were wounded in a powerful militant Improvised Explosive Device explosion in the heart of summer capital Srinagar on Friday morning.

Police said a small convoy, carrying troopers was attacked by militants, near the premier Presentation Convent High School at Rajbagh on Friday morning.

"A bus carrying the troopers was caught in the explosion injuring 16 troopers. The injured were evacuated to army base hospital for treatment. The condition of two soldiers is serious," a senior police officer said.

The area was immediately surrounded as senior army, police and paramilitary officers rushed to the explosion site.

Traffic, which was disrupted was later restored after searches in the area. However the authorities have closed the Presentation Convent High School for the day in the wake of the explosion.

Fortunately the school had not opened for the day when the explosion occurred.

On Thursday, three paramilitary troopers were wounded in another IED explosion in the north Kashmir Sopore town in Baramulla district.
