The normal life in the Kashmir valley came to a standstill on Friday following the strike called by the militant outfit Jamiatul Mujahideen against the reported Israeli plans to demolish the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

Demonstrations were held at many places including the Dalgate and Khanqah-e-moalla areas.

The People's Political Party also carried out a protest rally in this connection.

Shops and other business establishments remained closed in most parts of the valley while the roads and streets in the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas wore a deserted look due to the strike.

The effect of the strike was accentuated by the public holiday on account of Mahashivratri as offices and educational institutions remained closed while the skeletal transport service caused hardships to the commuters.
