Violent protests erupted in Rainawari area of Srinagar [Images] after a young woman died at a hospital, hours after giving birth to a child.

Hundreds of people carrying the body of 22-year-old Shagufta blocked the main road outside the hospital alleging that the woman died due to negligence of the doctors and para-medical staff, official sources said on Friday.

The protesters indulged in stone-pelting and smashed a number of window panes of the hospital, besides damaging an ambulance.

Police chased away the protesters, the sources said adding, the situation in the area was tense but under control.

According to the sources, Shagufta was admitted to the hospital with labour pain last evening and gave birth to a girl child.

However, her condition worsened and she died in the wee hours of Friday.

The attendants accompanying her accused the doctors of negligence claiming that she died of excessive bleeding as nobody from the hospital staff attended her, the sources said.

The medical superintendent of the hospital was not immediately available for his comment.
