The 11 Indians, stranded in Iraq after an attack by some assailants in which their three compatriots were killed, are expected to be issued passports and other travel documents by Wednesday to facilitate their exit from the war-torn country.

They are in Karbala and their particulars will be sent to the Indian Mission in Baghdad on Tuesday through the office of Karbala governor, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed told PTI in New Delhi on Monday.

As soon as the details are received by the mission, passports and other documents will be issued to them, he said adding, the task is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

Their passports and other belongings had been taken away by the armed men who attacked them at Rutba on August 31 and killed their three male associates.

The 11 were members of a group of 40 people -- 14 Indians and 26 Pakistanis -- on a pilgrimage to Karbala.

They were waylaid at Rutba on August 31 by some armed men who kidnapped three Indian and 11 Pakistani male members. All the abducted persons were later shot dead, and their funeral was conducted on Sunday in Karbala.

Proper attention is being paid to their welfare and for this purpose, they were moved to the Bohra Community Centre of Faizi Hussaini Trust run by an Indian Abdul Hussain Karbala, said the minister.

On their return, Ahamed said they would be transported to Iran where they will decide whether to come back home or proceed to Mecca and Medina for Umrah as per their original plan.
