A Border Security Force jawan was killed and 3 others were injured when militants exploded two grenades within a span of 15 minutes in Sopore township of Baramulla district on Sunday, official sources said.

The casualty occurred in the first grenade explosion when ultras targeted the BSF post at the Sopore branch of State Bank of India [Get Quote] in the main town, 55 km from Srinagar [Images], around 12:05 pm, the sources said.

The grenade exploded with a big bang, causing splinter injuries to seven personnel. One of the jawans, identified as constable J Raj Juneja of 133rd battalion, succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital. The condition of the three other injured personnel was stated to be serious. They have been referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment, the sources said.

Fifteen minutes after the first explosion, the sources said militants struck a nearby security post outside a defunct cinema hall with a grenade. However, the device failed to hit the target and exploded on the roadside causing no harm.

This was the second major strike by militants in as many days. Nine soldiers and a woman were injured when militants set off an explosive-laden car at Rawalpora bypass on the weekend targeting an army convoy passing through the area.
