Gutka baron J M Joshi Monday appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the allegation of his meeting underworld don and global terrorist Dawood Ibrahim and also helping his brother in setting up a gutka manufacturing unit in Karachi.
Joshi, whose lawyer had given a written undertaking in the Bombay high court that his client would be appearing before the CBI for questioning, came to the Special Crime Branch of the investigating agency during which he was questioned at length by the sleuths, CBI sources said.
Joshi, who gave the undertaking in the high court to get a stay on the non-bailable warrant issued against him by the Maharashtra Control of Crime Control Act court in Mumbai, would be appearing before the agency till March 10.
After getting a sanction under MCOCA from Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy against Joshi, another gutka baron Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal and Dawood, the CBI had begun looking for Joshi and Dhariwal to arrest them for questioning.
The CBI alleges Dhariwal was continuously abetting unlawful activities of the organised crime syndicate of Dawood by supplying Manikchand gutka to Golden Box Trading Company, Dubai, owned by Abdul Hamid Antulay, brother-in-law of Dawood.
CBI further alleged Joshi had demanded 20 per cent share of the capital and net profits from Dhariwal, who refused to pay, thus resulting in a financial dispute between the two.
