Two civilians were killed and five others were wounded in a militant ambush on an army convoy in north Kashmir Sopore town Friday afternoon.

Police said separatist militants ambushed a convoy of the army when it passed through the apple-rich town of Sopore in the Baramulla border district Friday afternoon.

"Two civilian passers-by -- identified as Shabir Ahmad and Mohammad Ashraf Khan -- were killed on the spot and five other persons including another civilian and four army troopers were wounded when militants fired from their automatic weapons on a passing army convoy in Sopore town Friday afternoon," a senior police officer said.

The injured have been taken for treatment to the hospital while the area was cordoned off and searches mounted there to locate the attackers.
