Ghulam Mustafa Bhat elected first mayor of Srinagar

Senior National Conference leader Ghulam [Images] Mustafa Bhat was on Monday elected the first ever mayor of Srinagar [Images], official sources said.

Bhat was declared elected unopposed as his was the only nomination to the post, they said.

Bhat, an advocate by profession, joined the NC in 1977 and won the Lal Chowk seat in the recently held civic polls.

Another NC leader, Ghulam Ahmad Hajam, was also declared elected unopposed to the post of deputy mayor. Hajam won from Zadibal in Srinagar.

The NC has 40 members in the 68-member Srinagar Municipal Corporation.

A front runner for the post was gunned down by suspected militants last month.
