58% turnout in J&K civic poll

Despite heavy snowfall, 58 per cent polling was recorded in the highly sensitive Doda-Udahmpur sector in the sixth phase of civic elections in Jammu and Kashmir [Images] till 1 pm on Saturday, official sources said.

Polling started amid tight security. Seven companies of security forces were deployed around 9 am, the sources added.

Doda recorded 50 per cent polling and Udhampur recorded 63 per cent, they said.

A total of 62,306 electors will decide the fate of more than 370 candidates.
