P A Sangma to be inducted into NCP Tuesday

December 20, 2005 14:14 IST

Purno A Sangma will be formally inducted into the Nationalist Congress Party, a party which he helpedfloat and later resigned from, in Delhi Tuesday.

He had founded the party along with Sharad Pawar and Tariq Anwar in June 1999 after breaking away from the Congress on the foreign origin issue involving Sonia Gandhi, but left about a year and half ago following differences with Pawar.

After parting ways with NCP, he had joined the Nationalist Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee. He quit his parliamentary post as the party's member protesting the September 30 police firing at Tura and Williamnagar that left 9 dead and over 100 injured.

Sangma told PTI in Shillong before emplaning for Delhi that he would be inducted as an ordinary member of the NCP.

Pawar and other senior leaders would be present at the function scheduled to be held at the NCP party office in Delhi to welcome Sagma back formally.

"It is a homecoming for me. I feel great," he said. Sangma, former Lok Sabha speaker and a veteran politician from the north east, is an eighth time member of Parliament from Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya's Garo Hills region.

His son Conrad was appointed the NCP national youth wing president by Pawar this week.
