A militant bid on the headquarters of 51 Rashtriya Rifles at Sungri in Udhampur district was foiled by security personnel on Sunday night.

Police sources said sepoy Nagesh Kumar, who was on sentry duty at the 51 RR headquarters at Sungri near Chasana in Reasi tehsil, noticed two to three militants moving stealthily towards the entry gate late on Sunday night.

He alerted the troops and challenged the militants who opened fire. In the ensuing gunbattle, lasting over half-an-hour, Nagesh was injured and is now hospitalised. However, the militants fled the area, the sources added.

Sources said the Army had launched a massive search operation for the militants.
