Infiltration bid, 5 terrorists killed

June 19, 2004 20:41 IST

There has been a major infiltration attempt by terrorists along the Line of Control in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.

An ambush party of the army killed five terrorists nearly two kilometres inside the LoC near Machil sector on Friday, sources said.

The ambush party observed some suspicious movement along the LoC following intelligence that terrorists were gathering to cross over to India, the sources said.

The terrorists were challenged on Friday night and a gun battle ensued, which lasted for nearly an hour. During search operations later, two bodies of terrorists were found, they said.

As the jawans were retrieving the bodies, they came under fire. Three terrorists were killing when the ambush party retaliated.

Three Kalashnikov rifles and several rocket-propelled grenage launchers were found on the spot.

This is the second major infiltration bid since snow started melting in early May. Six terrorists were shot dead at Kachhama in the same sector on June 12.
