January 30, 2004 12:42 IST

Security forces on Friday morning killed six foreign mercenaries, including two divisional commanders of the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, in an encounter in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, defence sources said.

On a tip-off about the presence of top militants of the Pakistan-based LeT and Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HUJI), troops of the Kilo Force raided a house in Sogam-Lolab area on Thursday evening.

An encounter ensued when the hiding militants opened fire on the troops. It was in progress till last reports came in.
