September 26, 2003 18:10 IST

The Hurriyat Conference on Friday supported Pakistan President Gen Pervez Musharraf's suggestion for a ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.

"I support Musharraf's suggestion for a ceasefire and appeal to India to reciprocate positively to smoothen the way for a permanent solution to the Kashmir problem," Hurriyat chairman Maulvi Mohammad Abbas Ansari said in a statement in Srinagar. "I also appeal to militants in J&K to drop their guns so that concrete steps are taken for resolution of the Kashmir issue," he said.

Musharraf had told the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday that he would invite India to observe a complete ceasefire along the LoC in Kashmir.
