Members must fall in line: Hurriyat chief

August 20, 2003 16:41 IST

Dismissing a rebel call for dissolution of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference's executive committee, its chairman Maulana Abbas Ansari on Wednesday warned general council members to fall in line or face punitive action.

"The executive will discuss Tuesday's meeting, where reportedly many general council members were present, to see whether there was a need for punitive action against some erring members," Ansari told PTI.

The Hurriyat chairman said an expansion of the seven-member executive can be considered, but the members will have to abide by the discipline of the amalgam.

Asked if the erring members could be sacked, Ansari said: "It has happened in the past...depends on what the executive decides."

He said the Kashmir Liberation Council was ousted from the amalgam during the tenure of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Without naming Geelani, the Hurriyat chairman said: "The person who was prominent in the ouster of KLC for breach of discipline is indulging in similar activities now."

Asked if there was any possibility of the disagreements leading to a split in in the 25-party combine, he replied in the negative.
