Replacing the lead actors has become quite common in television serials.

Actors quit either to take a short break from their hectic schedules or in search of greener pastures. Viewership and the serial's TRPs drop, as audiences often don't take kindly to a replacement.

However, many actors have brought a fresh appeal to the character they stepped in to replace the originally-cast actor.

Pratyusha Banerjee replaced by Toral Rasputra in Balika Badhu

It's official.

After a mysterious fallout with the producers of the show, Banerjee who played Anandi since 2010, has been replaced by former Dhoom Machao Dhoom actress Toral Rasputra.

According to reports, the Balika Vadhu producers were growing impatient with Banerjee's tantrums and attitude.

Rasputra's first episode as Anandi in the show aired last night.

Giaa Manek was replaced overnight as the very popular Gopi bahu in Saath Nibhana Saathiya last year.

The actress had, apparently, proceeded to star in celebrity dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on a rival channel, despite being asked not to.

Devoleena Bhattacharjee, the new Gopi bahu, is presently trying to fill her shoes.

Sushant Singh Rajput, who recently made his Bollywood debut with the successful Kai Po Che, became a household name as Manav in Pavitra Rishta.

When he decided to quit TV for films, Ekta Kapoor's (the head of Balaji Films) favourite, Hiten Tejwani, replaced him.

The generation leap that introduced Tejwani didn't go down too well. But he has slowly settled into the role.

Dil Mil Gaye was very successful with Shilpa playing the role of Dr Ridhimma.

When she quit to concentrate on her film career, Sukirti Khandpal replaced her.

Sukirti worked for almost a year and then left because she felt her character wasn't interesting enough.

Jennifer Winget replaced her. The serial lost momentum and didn't do that well.

Mishal Raheja was replaced by Shabbir Ahluwalia in Laagi Tujhse Lagan, which resulted in a drastic drop in the show's ratings.

Raheja eventually quit in his quest to make it big in films. However, viewers couldn't accept anyone else as Dutta bhau.

Different twists and turns in the plot have failed to grab eyeballs.

Sara Khan replaced Priyal Gor, who played the lead character of Mona in Ram Milaayi Jodi.

The serial's makers were reportedly unhappy with Gor's attitude.

Since the replacement was pretty early in the show, audiences accepted Sara, who went on to become more popular than Gor.

Smriti Irani was hugely popular as Tulsi in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

She quit following differences with Ekta Kapoor and Gautami Kapoor, stepping into her shoes, managed well but audiences missed the fiery Smriti in this family drama that ruled the TRP charts in its day.

After the conflict between Smriti and Ekta was resolved, Smriti was back.

The show soon ended after a dispute between the production house and the channel.

Nausheen Ali Sardar played the titular character in the popular show Kksusum that aired on Sony.

But actresses Mansi Joshi Roy and Shilpa Saklani, who were roped in to play the character later, did not make the same kind of impact.

Rajeev Khandelwal became synonymous with Sujal after playing the character in Kahin To Hoga.

He left the show to concentrate on films.

Subsequently, viewers just could not accept his replacement Gurpreet Singh. The serial did not do as well after Khandelwal's exit, and it ended soon after.

Amar Upadhyay, who was the original Mihir Virani in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, was brought back from the dead owing to his unbelievable popularity among the masses.

After he quit, Ronit Roy played Mihir following Inder Kumar's brief stint.

The show touched a new high and established Ronit Roy as a top television actor.
