When Star India announced its new channel Star One last November, the idea was to make sure it stayed away from the format that had made Star Plus successful -- the soaps format. The focus shifted to 'differentiated entertainment' and Star One has, to a large extent, managed it by ensuring its shows steer clear of hackneyed 'saas-bahu' tales.
Now, with the first anniversary round the corner, Star One has announced a new show called Nach Baliye. It's a sort of celebrity dance-off, where 10 real-life
Spread over 10 weeks, it will see one couple being voted off the show each week, by a panel of judges from the entertainment industry as well as a general TV audience.
Speaking at the launch of the show in Mumbai, Sameer Nair, Chief Operating Officer, Star India, said that when the channel was launched, one of its targets was to be number two (after Star Plus) among Hindi entertainment channels at the end of the year. It is now close to achieving that status. And it's betting on Nach Baliye to give it that leap forward.
