Singapore Airlines Limited is planning to start a new service to Bangalore in April next, besides capacity augmentation of its flights to Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata, a top executive of the SIA said on Wednesday.

The plan was to fly an aircraft three times a week to Bangalore from Singapore. India as a whole offered a good market for SIA, Rick Clements, vice-president, public affairs, told a news conference in Chennai.

SIA operates 24 flights to India a week at present.

By the end of October next, SIA was planning to operate additional services to Mumbai. "There will be progressive expansion of our services to India from next year besides operating bigger type of aircrafts to carry more passengers," Clements said.

Immediately after the September 11 incident last year, the number of non-resident Indians from the US visiting India came down.

The passenger arrival picked up subsequently from the US and other parts of the world, which forced the SIA to 'upgrade' its services to Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

Speaking about specific future plans relating to India, he said the SIA was exploring the possibility of entering into engineering maintenance services including providing ground handling facilities.

"Our long-term goal is to become a global group by undertaking airline-related works, which included buying equity of other airlines like Air New Zealand," he said.
