The markets closed in green but off their day's high. Buying was seen in scrips across sectors the top gainers were oil and gas, capital goods, banking and auto stocks. The midcaps and smallcaps were the outperformers.
The Sensex closed at 11,448.31 up 135 points. The Nifty gained 43 points to close at 3356.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,801.02 up 100 points or 1.75%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,781.48 up 58 points or 1.23%.
Most of the BSE sectoral indices closed in the positive terrain.
The BSE Bankex was up 2.5% at 5,171.71. Kotak Mahindra, Andhra Bank, HDFC Bank, PNB and Karnataka Bank moved upwards.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 2.35% at 5,432.26. HPCL, IOC, Kochi Refin and BPCL closed higher.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 2.16% at 7,696.94. Greaves Cotton, Thermax, L&T, Alstom Projects and BHEL closed higher.
The BSE Metal Index advanced by 1.5% at 8,377.50. JSW Steel, Hind Zinc, Welspun Guj, Sterlite Ind and Jindal Steel witnessed buying interest.
The BSE Auto Index gained 1% at 4,842.29. Hero Honda, Tube Investment, Sundram, Hind Motors , Mah and Mah were among the top gainers.
The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.09% at 1,972.67. Dabur India, HLL, ITC and Colgate closed in green.
The BSE Health Care Index was up by 1% at 3,463.71. GlaxoSmithKline, Aventis Pharma, Orchid Chemical, Lupin and Sun Pharma closed higher.
The BSE IT Index closed flat at 4,191.85. I-Flex Solution, Satyam, HCL Info and TCS advanced.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index lost 0.73% at 2,958.30.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 7012.75 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 20493.75 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3441.38 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 30947.88 crore.
