The Sensex, which opened at Thursday's close of 5,937, slipped marginally in early deals to touch a low of 5,922. After displaying a range-bound (positive zone) trend till early noon deals, the index witnessed a sharp turnaround thereafter as renewed buying emerged in most of the sectors.
Buying gained momentum towards the closing hours as fresh gains in heavyweights, tech, PSUs, pharma and other select old economy counters lifted the index above the 6,000 levels to an intra-day high of 6,017.
The Sensex signed-off the last day of the trading week with a surge of 75 points at 6,012.
The Nifty crossed the 1,900 mark during the intra-day trades, and ended at 1,914 - up 29 points.
ITC, on the back of unabated buying support, flared up nearly 5% (Rs 50) to close at Rs 1,060. Ranbaxy gained 1.32% (Rs 8) to Rs 596. HLL notched up 2.68% gains (Rs 5) to Rs 203.
SBI advanced 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 630. While HPCL moved up a per cent (Rs 4) to Rs 481, MTNL closed up a rupee at Rs 137. BHEL, however, lost nearly 2% (Rs 12) to Rs 598.
Wipro ended with a sharp gain of 3% (Rs 48) at Rs 1,628. While Satyam logged 1.79% gains (Rs 6) to Rs 338, Infosys ended with a steady gain of Rs 23 at Rs 5,377.
Cipla shot up 3.53% (Rs 41) to Rs 1,217. While Ranbaxy added nearly 2% (Rs 18) to Rs 1,000, Dr. Reddy's was up a per cent (Rs 11) at Rs 1,254.
Tata Motors rose 2.12% (Rs 11) to Rs 553. Bajaj added 1.11% (Rs 11) to Rs 1,021. Hero Honda, however, closed down a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 501.
BSES at Rs 641 (up Rs 12 or 1.96%). While Bharti Tele garnered 4% (Rs 6) to Rs 153, Zee was up 1.52% (Rs 2) at Rs 154.
Tisco clocked 2.87% gains (Rs 12) to Rs 439. Tata Power moved up 1.66% (Rs 6) to Rs 395.
Grasim, L&T, Gujarat Ambuja and ACC closed up a per cent each at Rs 1,140 (up Rs 8), Rs 527 (up Rs 5), Rs 309 (up Rs 4) and Rs 272 (up Rs 3), respectively.
ICICI Bank displayed weak trends through the session, and dropped 2.63% (Rs 8) to Rs 311.
