Sensex soars by 148 points, shrugs off panic

The stock markets soared on Tuesday, shrugging off Monday's panic that was triggered off by the twin blasts in Mumbai that killed more than 48 people and injured over 150.

The BSE Sensex zoomed by 148 points to close at 4152 points.

The NSE Nifty too rocketted up by 47 points to close at 1318 points.

Heavyweights, PSUs and tech stocks ended with steep gains.

ITC spurted 3% (Rs 23) at Rs 793. HLL scaled higher and moved up 5% (Rs 9) at Rs 189. Reliance, too, ended in positive territory with a gain of nearly 4% (Rs 13) at Rs 391.

SBI, which traded with steady gains till the early afternoon trades, gained ground thereafter and notched up nearly 6% gains (Rs 16) at Rs 437. BHEL clocked 6% gains (Rs 19) at Rs 338. MTNL rose 3% (Rs 4) to close at Rs 129. HPCL, after trading in a range-bound mode (positive territory), ended up a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 387.

Infosys remained firm through the session and vaulted 5% (Rs 186) to close at Rs 3,736. HCL Tech, after trading with steady gains for better part of the trading session, flared up nearly 4% (Rs 6) to close at Rs 168. Satyam, too, ended on a buoyant note with a spurt of 5% (Rs 10) at Rs 208.
