There is no denying that China is booming! According to a media reports sales of laptop computer and digital television -- items long considered fit only for the rich -- are expected to boom.

In 2004 itself, laptop sale in China is pegged to touch eight million from one million, while digital TV owners will rise from one million to 30 million within two years, Xinhua news agency quoted the ministry of information industry as saying.

Over the next five years, China's laptop computer market will keep growing steadily, with sales peaking in 2004, according to the China Centre for Information Industry Development, a consultancy company under the ministry.

However there is a flip side to it also. Sales for mobiles phones dropped in 2003 when China sold 80 million handsets, just half of its production volume.

Motorola, Nokia and Siemens, the three biggest selling cellphone brands, last year all claimed their actual sales failed to meet expectations.

Experts fear the cellphone's declining market may betray its increasing productivity.
