Government said on Tuesday over 1.74 lakh applications for permanent account number cards were still pending as on November 30.

"PAN card is issued normally within 15 days of receipt of application. From April 1, 2005 to November 30, PAN cards were dispatched within stipulated period. Delay beyond 15 days arises mainly due to defective, incomplete applications," Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam told Rajya Sabha in a written replay.

He clarified that persons who were alloted PAN before July 1, 2003, but did not receive the PAN card are required to apply to the service provider for the card.

In reply to another question, he said, the Income Tax Department had scrutinised 2.10 lakh cases in 2004-05 and 2.30 lakh in 2005-06 respectively.

Replying to another question, he said recently the Air Cargo (export), New Delhi, detected certain cases of ineligible drawback having been passed as supplementary claims.

In this connection, letters have been issued to 450 exporters for verification of records.
