Sensex gains 11 points at close

The Sensex opened above the 6,200 levels with a huge gain of 102 points at 6,211. The markets remained buoyant through the opening session as buying spree, particularly in PSUs, tech, cement and auto sectors lifted the index to an intra-day high of 6,250.

The afternoon session marked the beginning of the index slide as profit-taking emerged in most of the sectors and peaked towards the closing bell, dragging the index below the 6,100 levels to a low of 6,097.

The Sensex, however, on selective buying support, ended the last day of the trading week, with a modest gain of 11 points at 6,112. The Nifty slipped from a high of 2,015, and ended three points up at 1,972.

ITC (up Rs 5 to Rs 1,082), HLL (up a rupee to Rs 211) displayed steady trends. Reliance, however, slipped from higher levels to finish down 2% (Rs 14) at Rs 576.

SBI (up Rs 19 or 3% to Rs 641) and HPCL (up Rs 9 or 2% to Rs 470) ended with decent gains. BHEL, however, remained weak through the session, and down Rs 2 at Rs 576. MTNL lost 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 146.

Grasim traded off-highs, and gained 4% (Rs 46) to Rs 1,164. L&T and Gujarat Ambuja closed up a per cent each at Rs 580 (up Rs 6) and Rs 321 (up Rs 4), respectively. ACC, however, ended off-gains with a per cent loss (Rs 3) at Rs 271.

Hero Honda gained 6% (Rs 27) to Rs 483. While Bajaj closed up a per cent (Rs 12) at Rs 1,111, Tata Motors closed up a rupee at Rs 466.

Cipla moved up nearly 3% (Rs 35) to Rs 1,366. Ranaxby ended with a marginal gain of Rs 4 at Rs 1,077. Dr. Reddy's, however, had a mixed outing, and lost a per cent (Rs 7) to Rs 1,403.

Infosys opened firm, but slipped in afternoon deals to finish down a per cent (Rs 33) at Rs 5,806.

Wipro gained a per cent (Rs 19) to Rs 1,750. Satyam erased its gains on profit-taking, and dipped 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 369.

BSES jumped 7% (Rs 39) to Rs 573. Tata Power advanced 6% (Rs 24) to Rs 406.

ONGC shed 2% (Rs 32) to Rs 912. While Hindalco slipped a per cent (Rs 16) to Rs 1,458, Zee declined 2% (Rs 3) to Rs 165. Tisco closed down a per cent (Rs 5) at Rs 441.
