Ireland stun India in final-over drama to win series

image

India 153-9 (20 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

What a weekend for Irish cricket.

Ireland have pulled off a remarkable series win over India, defending totals in both games that India would usually expect to chase down comfortably. In the process, they've ended India's run of 16 straight T20I series victories.

Lorcan Tucker and his team have produced something special--doing it without five first-choice players and still finding a way to outfight one of the world's strongest sides.

As the celebrations continue, the Irish players take a lap around the ground, soaking in the applause from a proud home crowd that has witnessed a truly historic series.

Ireland stun India in final-over drama to win series

India 153-9 (20 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Harry Tector comes on to bowl the final over and starts with a wide. He then follows it up by conceding a single to deep mid-wicket, and Arshdeep Singh completes his job at the crease.

India now need 18 runs from 5 balls.

Tector bowls a high full toss--well above the batter's waist--and Harshit Rana swings it away into the open spaces towards deep mid-wicket. It races away and the pressure builds.

It's a no-ball, and a free hit follows.

Rana stays on strike. India need 15 from 5 balls.

He swings again--this time getting a faint inside edge, and it trickles away to the boundary! A slice of luck, but India will take it.

India now need 11 runs from 4 balls.

Rana drives it down to long-on and the batters take a single. Arshdeep is now on strike. India need 10 off 3 balls.

There’s a brief pause as both wicketkeeper Tucker and bowler Tector have a chat, while Rana and Arshdeep also exchange a few words in the middle. Another wide is called, and the tension only rises. India now need 9 off 3 balls, and Arshdeep nudges one away for a single.

Back to Rana, India need 8 off 2 balls.

Tector goes full and Rana goes for the big shot, but this time he falls into the trap. He mistimes it and Tim Tector makes no mistake at long-on. Caught! That surely seals it for Ireland.

Rana departs for 21 off 10 balls, and India’s hopes are all but over.

Prince Yadav walks in as the last man with just one ball remaining. He swings hard and launches it for a six but it’s only consolation.

Ireland hold their nerve and win a thriller by 1 run. 18 runs come from the final over in a dramatic finish.

22:12

India need 20 in 6 balls

India 135-8 (19 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

India need 34 runs from 12 balls, a steep task with just the lower order at the crease. Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh are now India's last recognised hopes, while Ireland sense history is within reach.

Jai Moondra has the ball--can he finish it off?

Rana and Arshdeep trade a single each, but at this stage Ireland won't be too worried about ones. Then Rana changes the tone of the over completely--he crashes a boundary, and follows it up with a massive six! Suddenly, India breathe again. The equation tightens to 22 needed from 8 balls.

Rana keeps strike moving with a single, there's a leg bye added, and another single to finish the over.

A huge over--14 runs from it. After 19 overs, India are 135 for 8.

India need 20 runs from 6 balls.

Ireland rock India as Tilak falls after fifty

India 121-8 (18 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Matthew Hollard comes back into the attack, but Tilak Varma greets him in style--launching a huge six! That's also his fifty, brought up in emphatic fashion. It's India's first six of the day, coming after 17.1 overs--an incredible moment under pressure.

But the joy is short-lived.

Hollard strikes back immediately. Tilak goes again but can't clear the fielder--caught by Liam McCarthy!

A massive wicket at a crucial stage, and Ireland are closing in on a famous win in Belfast.

India lose their seventh wicket, and the pressure is now fully on.

Harshit Rana walks in as the new batter and gets off the mark with a couple of runs. He then lets a wide, slower bouncer outside off go through -- too short and too wide and it's called a wide for height.

Rana gets a reprieve next ball as he is dropped by Calitz, who fails to hold on. He survives and manages to take a single off the following delivery.

But Ireland strike again.

Suryansh Shedge is caught by Tim Tector and departs for 1 off 5 balls.

Arshdeep is the new batter, dot to end the over.
22:00

Dube's departure shakes India chase vs Ireland

India 111-6 (17 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Liam McCarthy continues. Dube looks to loft one down the ground but doesn't quite get it off the middle.

Harry Tector charges in from the ring, dives forward, and does well to get his hands behind the ball, keeping it down to a single--an excellent bit of fielding.

Tilak Varma is cramped for room but manages to pull it away to deep square leg for another run. Dube then drags a pull shot in front of square to keep the strike rotating.

Tilak is now on 48 off 43 balls and will face the last ball of the over. He takes a single to finish it off.

Five singles come from the over. After 16 overs, India are 109 for 5.

India need 46 runs from 24 balls.

Matthew Humphreys to Shivam Dube -- THAT'S OUT!

Caught! Shivam Dube is gone--caught by George Dockrell. A massive breakthrough for Ireland right at a crucial stage of the chase.

Dube departs for 20 off 16 balls, and India are dealt a big blow in the middle overs.

Suryansh Shedge, on debut, comes in with a big job ahead of him. He starts by pushing one to cover for no run, before drilling the next down to long-off for a single -- his first runs in international cricket.

Tilak Varma then works one to long-on for another run. Shedge sees out the final two deliveries with a solid defence.

Just 2 runs from the over along with the big wicket of Dube -- an excellent over for Ireland. After 17 overs, India are 111 for 6.
India need 44 runs from 18 balls.

Dube, Tilak keep India alive in tense chase

image

India 104-5 (15 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Liam McCarthy returns to the attack, but it's a gift first up and Tilak Varma makes him pay, crunching it away for four. Tilak follows it with a couple of runs before India settle into rotating the strike with a string of singles.

There are a few drops of rain in the air once again, but play continues.

Dube keeps the strike with a single to end the over. India collect 10 runs from it and move to 95 for 5 after 14 overs.

India need 60 runs from 36 balls.

India are five wickets down, and another one from here could leave them in serious trouble. The partnership between Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube has become crucial, especially with a light drizzle returning over Belfast.

Matthew Humphreys is back into the attack, but Dube wastes no time, pulling away a boundary to ease some of the pressure. He then knocks one down to long-off for a single, bringing up India's 100.

Tilak chips in with a single to deep mid-wicket, and the pair continue to rotate strike through the rest of the over.

Nine runs come from it, taking India to 104 for 5 after 15 overs.

India need 51 runs from 30 balls.
21:39

Hollard strikes as Axar departs, India 5 down

India 85-5 (13 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Harry Tector returns to the attack. Shivam Dube gets the over underway by clipping one into the mid-wicket pocket for a single. Tilak Varma follows with a firm whip to long-on for another run.

Then comes a costly mistake in the field. Dube nudges one towards mid-off, but Tim Tector completely fumbles it, allowing the ball to slip through his hands and race away to the boundary. What should have been a routine single turns into India's first boundary in a while.

Dube keeps the strike moving with another single, while Tilak finishes the over by working one to the left of the bowler. Harry Tector gets across with a diving stop, restricting it to one.

Eight runs come from the over, taking India to 85 for 5 after 13 overs.
21:35

Hollard strikes as Axar departs, India 5 down

Matthew Humphreys is back into the attack. Tilak Varma starts the over with a pull behind square for a single, while Axar Patel punches one straight to extra cover. The pair continue to rotate strike with a couple more singles, but Ireland keep things tight. Just 5 runs come from the over, leaving India at 71 for 4 after 11 overs.

India need 84 runs from 54 balls.

Matthew Hollard returns, and Tilak gets things moving with a well-run couple after tucking one into mid-wicket. He then guides the next delivery to backward point for a single.

Hollard then delivers the breakthrough India didn't want. Axar looks to force the issue but only manages an edge through to Lorcan Tucker, who takes an excellent catch behind the stumps.

The crucial 34-run partnership is broken as Axar departs for 14 off 18 balls. India slip to 74 for 5.

Shivam Dube walks in at No. 7 and gets off the mark straight away with a single. India keep the scoreboard ticking with a string of singles, but Ireland continue to squeeze the scoring.

Six runs and a wicket come from the over. After 12 overs, India are 77 for 5.

India need 78 runs from 48 balls.
21:27

India face uphill task, need 89

India 66-4 (10 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

The sun is back out, and we're ready to resume. Axar Patel and Tilak Varma return to the middle, with Harry Tector resuming the attack from around the wicket.

Axar starts cautiously, missing an attempted flick before Tector sprays one down the leg side for a wide. Axar then picks up a couple of runs, and the pair rotate strike through the rest of the over. A tidy 7 runs come from it, taking India to 61 for 4 after 9 overs.

Liam McCarthy takes over from the other end. His first delivery climbs a little too high as Tilak lets it pass. Tilak then swivels nicely to pull one to deep mid-wicket for a couple before getting a thick leading edge on a flick that trickles towards mid-off for a quick single.

Axar enjoys a slice of luck next, chipping one straight back off the toe end. McCarthy gets both hands to it in his follow-through but can't hold on, allowing India another single.

Five runs come from the over, and after 10 overs India are 66 for 4.

India need 89 runs from the final 60 balls.

Moondra strikes as Samson, Abhishek fall for 0

India 1-2 (1 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson walk out to open the innings for India, with Samson taking first strike against Jai Moondra, who comes in over the wicket with a slip in place.

And there's immediate drama.

Samson is struck on the pads and given out LBW straight away. He doesn't hesitate and reviews it. UltraEdge confirms no bat involved, and ball-tracking shows it's clipping the top of leg stump--three reds. The decision stands. Samson is gone for a duck, and Moondra has struck early.

Ishan Kishan walks in as the new batter.

Ishan Kishan starts cautiously, toe-ending a drive straight to mid-off before hopping into position to punch one past sweeper cover for a single.

But the pressure tells on the other end.

Abhishek Sharma looks to take on Jai Moondra but ends up mistiming it completely. Matthew Hollard settles under it and takes a clean catch --another breakthrough for Ireland.

Moondra is on fire early in the innings.

Shreyas Iyer walks in at No. 4 with India already in deep trouble at 1 for 2.

He looks to settle in with an expansive drive but is beaten. Riding the bounce, he adjusts quickly and gets behind the next delivery, offering a solid defensive shot.

After a dramatic first over, India are 1 for 2.
21:11

Moondra runs riot as Iyer falls, India 3 down

image

India 19-3 (2.4 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Humphreys shares the new ball with Moondra. Kishan gets India moving, pushing one to long-off for a single. Iyer responds in style, cracking a boundary before rotating strike with a single. Kishan joins in with a boundary of his own as India collect a couple more runs to end the over. A lively start--12 runs from it, and India are 13 for 2 after 2 overs.

Moondra continues. Iyer begins positively, punching one to sweeper cover for a single. Kishan chips another into the leg side for one more. Then comes a loose delivery--short and wide outside off--and Iyer cashes in, slashing it through point for four.

But Moondra strikes back immediately.

A good-length delivery shapes away outside off, Iyer looks to force it through the off side but only manages a thick inside edge that crashes back onto the stumps. Bowled! Shreyas Iyer is gone, and he stands in disbelief as Moondra picks up his third wicket. The Irish fans are loving every moment.

Tilak Varma walks in as the new batter.
21:11

Ireland run riot as India collapse to 39-4

India 39-4 (5 Ovs) vs Ireland 154-8 | SCORECARD

Tilak Varma gets going with a couple of runs, slicing a drive to the right of deep backward point before getting a thick leading edge that just clears the infield near cover. India manage 8 runs and lose a wicket from the over, and after 3 overs they are 21 for 3.

Matthew Hollard comes into the attack next. Kishan and Tilak keep things steady with singles, but scoring is tight--just 4 runs come from the over. After 4 overs, India are 25 for 3.

Jai Moondra continues, and Tilak greets him in style with back-to-back boundaries before rotating strike with a single.

Then disaster for India.

Ishan Kishan pushes one towards cover and sets off, but Ross Adair produces a brilliant direct hit from backward point. Kishan is well short--run out!

Axar Patel walks in as the new batter.

Tilak responds with another boundary, but a leg bye is also added. Ireland go upstairs for a LBW review against Tilak, but there's no spike on UltraEdge and the impact is outside leg stump. Not out.

A mixed over--14 runs and a wicket. After 5 overs, India are 39 for 4.
21:10

Just 2 runs come from it, and after 6 overs India are 41 for 4.

Harry Tector continues. Tilak sweeps nicely to the left of backward square leg for a couple of runs, before rotating strike with a single towards deep backward square leg. Axar then eases a controlled drive to long-off for another single.

A steady over for India--7 singles from it. After 7 overs, India are 48 for 4.

The batters continue to rotate strike, keeping things moving with singles. A steady over for India--6 runs from it, and after 8 overs they are 54 for 4.

India, however, still have a foothold in the chase thanks to Tilak Varma, who is holding firm on 21, with Axar Patel offering support at the other end.

Despite the early damage, India will still back themselves in this chase.

They need 101 runs from 72 balls, and are currently 15 runs behind the DLS par score of 69 for 4 after 8 overs.

Prince Yadav shines with 3-wicket T20I debut

image

Ireland 154-8 (20 Ovs) vs India | SCORECARD

Prince Yadav comes on to bowl the final over.

McCarthy works the first ball down, and it trickles past the stumps for a single. Tector then survives a close moment, somehow getting his bat down in time to dig it out. India go upstairs for an LBW review against him, with Shreyas Iyer taking a quick word before deciding to challenge the on-field call.

Replays show it's missing leg stump. There's nothing on UltraEdge, and ball-tracking confirms it's going down leg. Not out--India lose the review.

Tector picks up a couple of runs with smart running, before a wide is called down the leg side.

Then comes the breakthrough.

Prince Yadav hits it hard into the pitch, and Ishan Kishan does well to move quickly and take a sharp catch after a dive. Harry Tector is gone for 53 off 47 balls, and Prince Yadav has his second wicket.

Jai Moondra walks in and gets off the mark with a single.

On the final delivery, Prince goes back to the slower ball--Liam McCarthy skies it straight up, and Ishan Kishan takes his third catch of the match. What a debut for Prince Yadav--three wickets for him.

After 20 overs, Ireland finish on 154 for 8.

Arshdeep Singh is brought back into the attack for the penultimate over.

Dockrell is given a bit of room but can only defend it, before picking up a couple of runs. However, Arshdeep strikes again--Dockrell goes after it but finds Axar Patel at sweeper cover. Another batter falls trying to clear that boundary rider. Dockrell departs for 19 off 14 balls, and Arshdeep has his second wicket.

Liam McCarthy is the new batter and starts cautiously, missing a steer before getting off strike with a single.

Tector then finishes the over in style with a boundary, bringing up a well-made fifty off 44 balls. It's a special moment--his first T20I fifty in eight innings, coming in his 100th T20I appearance.

After 19 overs, Ireland are 149 for 6.

Suryansh Shedge continues. Tector works it into the vacant mid-wicket pocket for a couple of runs. He then meets the next one nicely on the bounce, nudging it to mid-off for a single.

Ireland finally find some momentum as Calitz breaks free with a much-needed boundary. And it gets even better--he launches the next delivery for six, clearing the field (and just about Samson).

But there's more drama--Shedge appears to have overstepped, so Ireland will get a free hit as well.

On the free hit, Tector goes big again--SIX! It's dropped and then parried over the rope. The catch wouldn't have counted, but Arshdeep will feel he should have done better trying to save the boundary.

A full toss outside off follows, with a single to finish the over.

A huge one for Ireland--22 runs from it. After 11 overs, they are 80 for 3.

Benjamin Calitz walks in and gets off the mark with a single, although a direct hit might have made things interesting. Tector survives a close moment too, with Prince Yadav putting down a return chance.

But the drop doesn't prove costly.

Next ball, Arshdeep strikes as Adair departs, caught by Tilak Varma after mistiming the shot. He goes for 16 off just 7 balls.

Lorcan Tucker comes in and gets off the mark immediately with a single. Harry Tector then finds the boundary with a well-timed stroke, before being beaten on the next delivery.

The next ball has extra bounce outside off. Tector goes for the pull but gets a thick inside edge, and it flies straight into the safe hands of Abhishek Sharma at mid-wicket. He departs for 5 off 6 balls.

Harry Tector walks in as the new batter and sees out the final delivery of the over with a solid defence.

A brilliant over from Harshit Rana--just 4 runs and a wicket, leaving Ireland at 22 for 1 after 2 overs.

India to bowl vs Ireland, Sooryavanshi misses out

image

Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker flipped the coin, and Shreyas Iyer called it correctly to give India the toss. India have decided to bowl first.

Shreyas Iyer said India want to adapt quickly to the conditions and play smart cricket, backed by a group of experienced players. He added that the team used their day off well and are ready to go. Iyer confirmed two debutants in the XI -- Suryansh Shedge and Prince Yadav -- praising Shedge's performances in domestic cricket and the IPL, while saying Prince should not be burdened with too much pressure.

Lorcan Tucker said Ireland would have been happy to bat first, aiming to get an early read on the pitch. He pointed to their disciplined performance in the previous match as a positive. Tucker confirmed an unchanged XI, with Humphreys fit, and paid tribute to Harry Tector for reaching 100 caps, calling it a reflection of his consistency and hard work.

However, there's disappointment for fans eager to see young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is not in the XI and will have to wait for his international debut.

Can India bounce back vs Ireland in 2nd T20I?

India will look to bounce back from a stunning defeat and level the two-match T20I series 1-1 when they take on Ireland in the second game in Belfast on Sunday.

Shreyas Iyer's return to T20Is after 963 days, and his first outing as India's T20 captain, ended on a disappointing note as Ireland pulled off a memorable 34-run win. Chasing 186, India suffered a dramatic batting collapse and were bowled out for just 148.

With the series on the line, all eyes will be on how India respond after the disappointing performance. Fans will also be hoping to see 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his much-anticipated debut in Indian colours.
