Bumrah, Samson return

Namibia skipper Gerhard Erasmus has won the toss and he has decided to bowl first against India in their T20 World Cup match in New Delhi.

"We are going to have a bowl. It is a very good flat cricketing surface, from a surface and dew point of view it is the right thing to do. It is about tightening our skillset. Looks like a good wicket, try and chase it in the second half. That's why we play cricket, to entertain. We have two changes," said Erasmus after winning the toss.

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav said, "We were looking to bat first. Very happy with it. As long as we are losing the toss and winning the game, we are fine with it. Dew is going to be a big factor, but when you go out and defend totals, it gives you confidence. Abhishek is still not fine, he will miss a game or two. Sanju comes in, similar batter, explosive. Bumrah comes in for Siraj."

India likely to test squad depth

image
Hello and welcome to the coverage of Match No. 18 of the T20 World Cup between India and Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

After a stuttering batting performance on a tacky Wankhede track in the opener against the USA, the Indian batting line-up would like to go all guns blazing on a Feroz Shah Kotla track that could be called a belter for quality teams.

And when it comes to quality, the defending champions are light years ahead of Namibia, which hardly looked up to scratch against fellow Associate nation the Netherlands at the same venue.

To be fair to India, the match against Namibia is more of an extended warm up tie where they would like to bat first and let the line-up get a good hit in the middle.

A third-string India A team had dismissed Namibia for less than a 100 in a warm-up tie before the tournament.

Injury concerns

All-rounder Washington Sundars return from an injury layoff boosts Indias squad depth, but they are dealing with a spite of injury concerns.

Jasprit Bumrah, who sat out of the opening match due to illness, is expected to play against Namibia, but Abhishek Sharma has not fully recovered tom a stomach issue.

Tilak Varma confirmed that Abhishek was discharged from the hospital, but India will make a decision on his availability closer to match day.

The team may choose to rest key players and give the reserves some game time.

Teams (from):

India: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (Wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohd Siraj, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Rinku Singh.

Namibia: Gerhard Erasmus (Captain), Jan Balt, Zane Green (Wicketkeeper), Malan Kruger, Dylan Leicher, Lauren Steenkamp, Jan Frylinck, Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton, William Myburgh, JJ Smit, Jack Brassel, Max Heingo, Bernard Scholtz, Ben Shikongo, Ruben Trumpelmann.

Nepal 123 (19.3 Ovs) vs Ita | SCORECARD

Italy's spinners delivered a disciplined performance, maintaining tight lines and lengths to dismiss Nepal for 123 in 19.3 overs in their T20 World Cup match in Mumbai on Thursday.

Days after suffering a 73-run thrashing at the hands of Scotland -- who had posted the tournament's first 200-plus total -- Italy bounced back strongly.

Their bowlers, especially spinners Ben Manenti (2/9) and Crishan Kalugamage (3/18), applied the brakes effectively, playing a key role in strangling the opposition.

Nepal, who had come close to stunning England in their previous match before eventually losing by four runs, never quite found momentum.

They struggled to score freely and lost wickets at regular intervals, preventing them from building any substantial partnerships.

The team's 100 came only in the 16th over, underlining their slow approach, particularly against Italy's disciplined spin attack.

Earlier, Italy's stand-in skipper Harry Manenti won the toss and chose to field in their Group C match.

Lalit Rajbanshi is the new man in and after a dot, he plays to cover and takes a tight run even as Harry Manenti, picks the ball, turns and hits the stumps at the non-strikers' end for a direct hit and Rajbanshi is run out for a duck and Nepal are all out for a paltry 123.

Jaspreet comes back to bowl the final over and he bowls a slower, short ball and Lamichhane goes for the big hit, get a top edge, the ball flies and stays up and Manenti does well to keep his eye on the ball and complete the catch at mid-off and he is out for 5.

Stewart is back in the attack and Lamichhane and Karan start the over with a single each off the first two balls.

Lamichhane then punches the ball down to long on for a single before Karan clips the ball to deep mid-wicket for a couple.

In the first match of the day, Sri Lanka beat Oman by 105 runs in a T20 World Cup Group B match at Pallekele.

Fighting hard but not quite there, Nepal will look to go the distance and end a winless run in the T20 World Cup when they face tournament debutants Italy in a Group C match, in Mumbai on Thursday.

Having made their debut in the competition 12 years ago, Nepal recorded a couple of wins in the 2014 edition when they defeated Hong Kong and Afghanistan but the Himalayan nation has gone winless since.

Interestingly, Nepal have come agonisingly close on three occasions to beat Test-playing nations but ended up on the wrong side of the result.

In 2024, they lost to South Africa by just one run and against Bangladesh by 21 runs.

But the four run defeat in a heroic chase against England on Sunday at the Wankhede stadium has firmly placed them in the spotlight and created a buzz around Nepalese cricketers.

They have shown tremendous grit having honed their skills in one of the toughest formats with minimal exposure to international cricket.

A 10-year gap in playing T20 World Cups notwithstanding, Nepal matched England -- a two-time world champion -- almost on each count on the field and displayed their resolve on the biggest platform.

Neither were they bogged down by the grandeur of the stage or the weight of the expectations. As many as 17,008 fans at the Wankhede made noise for the 'Rhinos', which matched the decibel levels usually witnessed when the home team plays at the stadium.

In Kushal Bhurtel, Nepal have the top-order aggressor who can provide aggressive starts while the formidable middle-order comprising Dipendra Singh Airee, skipper Rohit Paudel and Aarif Sheikh provides them a lot of firepower.

Lokesh Bam threatened to cause a real upset against England with his brutal stroke play which left the likes of Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid stunned, even as the big-hitting Karan KC took a backseat.

However, there were a few areas of concern which Nepal will want to address as they move ahead.

They certainly did not get enough boundaries in the middle overs against England in a tall chase, and their running between the wickets also requires improvement.

To their credit, Nepal did not make too many errors with the ball for a large part of England innings, but ended up giving away far too many runs in the death overs.

On the other hand, Italy will want to leave behind their crushing 73-run loss to Scotland in the tournament-opener behind them and start afresh.

Italy also had their skipper Wayne Madsen dislocating his shoulder at the start of the game and in all likelihood, Harry Manenti will lead the side.

Italy used as many as seven different bowling options but failed to contain a side which did not have an ideal build-up to the tournament, and their response in chase of 208 was far from ideal.

Six of their batters fell in single digits; three recorded ducks.

Ben Manenti's half-century and some big hits from Harry were the only bright spots for Italy, who will want to make all-round improvement in their remaining matches of the tournament.

From the other end, Jay Odedra begins his off-spin. Nissanka welcomes him with a boundary and follows it up with a quick single. Odedra then finds his breakthrough -- Kamil Mishara is bowled for 8 off 7 balls! The pace proves too much, giving Jay his first wicket.

Kusal Mendis walks in as the new batter and immediately gets into gear, striking a boundary followed by another, putting 14 runs on the board in the second over along with the wicket.

After two overs, Sri Lanka are 23 for 1.

Oman opt to field vs Sri Lanka

Hello and welcome to the coverage of the T20 World Cup clash between Sri Lanka and Oman in Pallekele.

Sri Lanka head into the game with momentum, but key concerns loom large. The loss of lead spinner Wanindu Hasaranga to a tournament-ending hamstring injury leaves a significant gap in their bowling attack, while a shaky batting display against Ireland has put the top order under pressure to find rhythm and aggression.

Meanwhile for Oman, the match is historic as it marks their first-ever T20 International against Sri Lanka, making it a landmark occasion for the emerging side.

Oman have won the toss and will put Sri Lanka in to bat first!
