Both teams make one change

Have a look at the Playing XIs:

West Indies: Brandon King, Shai Hope (Captain & Wicketkeeper), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph.

England: Philip Salt, Jos Buttler (Wicketkeeper), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (Captain), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

"We're going to have a bowl. We've looked at the stats and they favour the team batting second, so we'd like to chase tonight. It's all about staying calm, really - sticking to our processes and game plans. Hopefully, we can put in a good performance tonight. Jamie Overton comes in for Luke Wood. Just a bit of extra batting depth. There's no issue or hardships for Luke - we've simply decided to go down that route tonight," England skipper Harry Brook said after winning the toss.

West Indies captain Shai Hope said: "We would've bowled first as well, but now it's about setting the tone with the bat. It can feel like a bit of a wrestling match when you play the same opposition regularly. You know what they're capable of, and they know you too. It's important that we bring our A game. This is a big fixture for us, and we'll be ready. We have one change - Forde misses out and Roston Chase comes in."

England opt to field vs West Indies

image
Welcome to the coverage of Match No. 15 of the T20 World Cup between England and the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

England have won the toss and they have elected to bowl first.

In the just-concluded match, Australia defeated Ireland by 68 runs.

Both England and the West Indies have won the competition twice in the past and are chasing a third title win like tournament co-hosts and defending champions India.

Nepal's four-run defeat, or a narrow win which England emerged with in their opening match a few nights ago, was a challenge the former champions overcame by a very close margin.

But it certainly will keep the Harry Brook-led side on its toes going forward.

England will also be keen to improve their standing in Group C. They are placed third with a Net Run Rate of 0.200 while Scotland are second with two points and NRR of 0.950.

The West Indies, who have two points, have the best NRR of 1.750.

However, the West Indies will also know that there is very little room for a slip-up especially at a venue where the pitch has had something for the bowlers in the first two matches.

Another wide full delivery which Rickelton again cracks through the off-side for back to back fours, making it 64 from the last 30 balls.

Rickelton clips the last ball to square leg for two runs to make it 23 runs from Noor's first over.

South Africa race to 98/1 in 10 overs, with de Kock on 48 from 31 balls and Rickelton smashing 44 from 21 balls.

South Africa looking on course for a 200-run total unless Afghanistan can strike a few wickets in the next couple of overs.

De Kock, Rickelton on the attack!

SA 75-1 (9 ovs) vs Afg | SCORECARD

Captain Rashid Khan brings himself into the attack. De Kock continues his positive approach as he lofts the third ball straight down the ground for a six over long-off.

Three singles and a wide makes it 10 runs from Rashid's first over.

South Africa on the charge, not allowing the spinners to settle down. Rickelton top edges the sweep as the ball goes over the wicketkeeper for two runs.

However, he makes good connection with the sweep next ball for a six over midwicket.

Rashid also comes under attack. De Kock seems to have miscued the lofted shot but the fielder at long-on over runs the ball and ends up conceding a four.

Ricketon reverse sweeps the Afghanistan captain for another boundary as runs continue to flow.

Rashid has gone for 21 runs in his first two overs as South Africa have continued to find the boundaries after the Powerplay, scoring 31 in the last three.

South Africa recover after early wicket

SA 43-1 (6 ovs) vs Afg | SCORECARD

After three dots in a row and the pressure increasing, de Kock breaks the shackles as he swings Mujeeb over midwicket for a six.

The next ball is on the shorter side and this time the left-hander slaps it past point for a four.

Rickelton also looks to continue the momentum as he drives new bowler Azmatullah Omarzai's first ball uppishly through the covers for a four.

He then pulls a short ball past the fielder at midwicket for another boundary.

A single each to the two batters and Rickelton pushes the last ball past point for two runs to get 12 from the over.

Afghanistan's decision not to give Farooqi a third over proves crucial as Azmatullah goes for runs in his first over.

Spinner Mohammad Nabi comes into the attack. De Kock makes room to smash the third ball through the covers as South Africa recover to 43/1 in six overs, with 31 coming from the last three.

Farooqi strikes; South Africa lose early wicket

SA 12-1 (3 ovs) vs Afg | SCORECARD

Spin from the other end as Mujeeb ur Rahman comes in to bowl the second over.

De Kock also gets going with a nicely-timed boundary through the covers. He gets the edge off the fourth ball but the wicketkeeper has barely any time to react as it goes past his gloves for a single.

Markram and de Kock pick a single each off the last two balls to get seven from the over.

Farooqi strikes with the early wicket for Afghanistan. It is the big wicket of South Africa captain Markram, who is foxed by the slower ball, as he miscues the lofted shot and Nabi at mid-off judges the high catch to perfection.

Markram walks back after scoring just five runs.

New batter Ryan Rickelton is beaten on the outside edge as Farooqi bowls a beauty, getting it to move away enough to go past the edge.

Just a single and the key wicket of Markram in that over, with Farooqi's figures reading 1/5 in two overs.

Afghanistan elect to bowl vs South Africa

SA 4-0 (1 ov) vs Afg | SCORECARD

The dangerous duo of Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram walk out to open the batting at the Narendra Modi stadium, which is around 80-90 percent empty.

Left-arm pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi to open the bowling for Afghanistan.

Markram defends the first ball before he inside edges the next on to his pads. He is beaten off the fifth ball as Farooqi gets the ball to move away, going past the outside edge.

However, the last ball is overpitched as Markram plays a nice drive through the covers for a four to get the Proteas off the mark.

Afghanistan face must-win game vs SA

Welcome to the coverage of the T20 World Cup Group D match between Afghanistan and South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

With only two teams slated to make the Super Eight stage from each group, Afghanistan find themselves in a must-win situation when they take on an in-form South Africa.

South Africa are perched at the top, head and shoulders above the rest, as their 57-run victory over minnows Canada bolstered their Net Run Rate to 2.850 along with two points.

On the other hand, a five-wicket defeat to New Zealand (+1.162) saw Afghanistan slip to third with a Net Run Rate of -1.162, which they have to improve upon in order to advance to the next round.

Afghanistan rode on Gulbadin Naib's 35-ball 63 and handy contributions from the other batters to put up a formidable score of 182 for six while batting first against New Zealand.

But the Afghans were left to rue their decision of leaving out Noor Ahmad, despite his experience of playing T20 cricket at the Chepauk, in favour of fast bowlers who failed to execute their plans and bowled wayward.

Afghanistan have played against the Proteas only three times and that too in T20 World Cups, losing all three games -- by nine wickets in the 2024 edition, by 37 runs in the 2016 edition and by 59 runs in 2010.

South Africa will feel confident going into this clash having put up an all-round show against Canada. Skipper Aiden Markram (59) led from the front with a brisk half-century and the others also chipped in with valuable runs to push them beyond 200 in a one-sided game against Canada.
