Welcome to the updates of the IPL match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni's possible final hurrah at the Eden Gardens will be a captivating sub-plot when Kolkata Knight Riders square off against Chennai Super Kings in a must-win clash in front of a crowd expected to be draped in yellow, in Kolkata on Wednesday.

While five-time champions CSK are already out of the playoff race, Dhoni remains at the helm, and his presence alone is expected to turn Eden yellow, despite the match being on KKR's home turf.

So, when the iconic No.7 walks out on May 7, many will wonder if it's the last time Dhoni plays at this historic venue.

Dhoni, who took responsibility for CSK's narrow two-run loss to RCB in their previous match, is no longer the dominant force he once was.

Despite being in a strong position at 172/2 while chasing 214, CSK fell short in the final over.

Dhoni was dismissed by Yash Dayal off the third ball of the last over, managing 12 runs off 8 balls. He later took the "blame" for the loss.

But for the fans, Dhoni is still an emotion, and a strong one at that.

Out of the playoff race, CSK are unlikely to make it easy for the home team.

With Dhoni still captaining and young players like Ayush Mhatre eager to make a mark, CSK will look to play a fearless brand of cricket.

The biggest positive for CSK this season has been the emergence of 17-year-old Mhatre.

Signed as a replacement for injured skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Mhatre, who had never played a domestic T20 and went unsold at the mega auction, made an immediate impact with a quick-fire 32 off 15 balls against Mumbai Indians.

But his standout performance came against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he struck a brilliant 94 off 48 balls.

While CSK lost that match narrowly, Mhatre's innings under pressure was one of the most impressive by a debutant this season.

While it's a do-or-die game for KKR, who must win all their remaining three matches to stay in playoffs contention, the match will be more about celebrating Dhoni's legacy than the result.

KKR currently have 11 points, and winning all three of their remaining games will take them to 17. Even then, qualification could come down to net run-rate and other results.

KKR's remaining fixtures -- against Sunrisers Hyderabad and RCB (both away) -- are tricky. Coming off a thrilling one-run win over Rajasthan Royals, KKR will look to build on that momentum.

Andre Russell's return to form was crucial in that game, and the Ajinkya Rahane-led KKR will hope that Venkatesh Iyer, who has been under scrutiny for his Rs 23.75-crore price tag, can also find his rhythm, possibly drawing inspiration from the Jamaican's explosive unbeaten fifty.

Russell's match-up against spinners will be important, especially with CSK likely to use Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin on a surface that offers a bit of grip.

GT steal win in last-ball thriller vs MI

image

Chahar had the ball for the final over of this epic clash - and as if the tension wasn't already sky-high, Mumbai Indians were handed an over-rate penalty, allowing them only four fielders outside the ring. Gujarat Titans needed 15 off the last 6 balls, with Tewatia on strike. He got them going immediately with a boundary off the first ball. A single followed, leaving 10 needed off 4.

Then came the big blow - Chahar missed his yorker and Gerald Coetzee, facing his former franchise, smashed it for six, bringing the equation down to 4 off 3. The next delivery was sliced into the gap for a single, but the drama only intensified - it was called a no-ball.

Now, just 2 needed off 3 balls. Another single brought the scores level. One needed off two deliveries.

But cricket had one more twist to offer. Coetzee attempted to finish it in style but skied a short ball, and Naman Dhir took a composed catch. Coetzee was gone for a fighting 12 off 6.

That left Gujarat needing one run off the final ball, with Arshad Khan on strike. Hardik Pandya had a shy at the stumps - and missed.

The Titans scampered through and sealed a win straight out of a fantasy script.

Against the odds, under pressure from a roaring crowd, facing down a star-studded MI and even the elements, Gujarat Titans emerged victorious by 3 wickets in one of the most dramatic finishes this IPL season. A two-point steal and a night Wankhede won't forget.

IPL Updates: GT need 15 off 6 balls

image
GT 132-6 (18 Ovs) vs MI 155-8

GT need 31 off 18 as Ashwani Kumar returns to the attack. Tewatia picks up a single first ball. Rashid Khan, on strike, completely misreads the trajectory and plays down the wrong line. He's struck flush on the back leg-this looks close. The review confirms it: pitching in line, impact in line, and the ball crashing into leg stump two-thirds of the way up. Rashid is gone for 2 off 3, and MI's comeback dream inches closer to reality. What once seemed impossible is now firmly within reach.

Coetzee, who has barely featured this season, walks in under pressure with GT needing 30 off 16. A dot ball follows, and then a missed run-out chance adds to the drama-almost a perfect yorker outside off, and confusion between the wickets could've cost GT dearly.

Coetzee finally gets off the mark with a single and ends the over with a valuable boundary. Seven runs come off the over. After 18 overs, GT are 132 for 6 and need 24 from 12 balls.

But here's the twist-the rain is back, and it's getting heavier. The players are heading off the field. At this moment, GT are 5 runs behind the DLS par score, and unless play resumes quickly, MI could pull off a stunning turnaround.

It's coming down heavily now, and this already dramatic game has taken yet another twist. The momentum has swung back and forth all evening, but at the moment, the rain is falling steadily at the venue. The cut-off time for a possible restart is 12:25 AM local time, but conditions aren't improving.

As things stand, MI are in a winning position, with GT trailing by 4 runs on the DLS par score. Gujarat will be desperately hoping for the rain to ease up, while Mumbai will be praying it continues just a little longer.

The rain has eased slightly, but a persistent drizzle continues-casting serious doubt over the chances of a restart. It's a cruel twist for a game that was building toward a thrilling finish. The Titans, crucially, remain behind the DLS par score, and if no further play is possible, MI will be declared winners and move to the top of the table.

Given how much rain has fallen, the ground staff may need more than ten minutes to get the field match-ready. At this stage, it's a race against time-and right now, rain is winning.

The umpires have now stepped out onto the field and are in discussion with the ground staff. It's well into touch-and-go territory now, with every minute crucial. The drizzle has eased, but conditions are still far from ideal. The next few moments will determine whether we get a dramatic finish-or if the rain has the final say.

There's a twist in the tale! A restart is at 12:30 AM, and the match will be reduced to a 19-over chase. That means GT will have one more over to try and turn this around. According to the TV broadcast, the revised target is 15 runs off 6 balls-a nail-biting finish in the making.

The covers are coming off now, and there's renewed energy around the ground. We might just get the finale this game deserves!
