Jadeja's super quick over allows India to have the time to bowl Bumrah the final over of the day.

Brook has already shut shop as he looks to block everything but Bumrah stretches an already long day with a couple of no-balls.

Bumrah works his magic again. Brook loses patience as he plays a rash pull shot only to be caught by a diving Siraj at midwicket.

Before India could start celebrating, the umpire stretches his hands out to signal a no-ball.

That is such a crucial moment. If India had Brook before stumps, it would have put them in control of the contest.

Bumrah bowls a cracking yorker as Brook digs it out before he nearly perishes last ball.

A cracking delivery which kicks off sharply as Brook does well to avoid it.

England finish the day on 209/3 in 49 overs, trailing India by 262 runs.

The last ball grips and turns as Pant gets the outside edge trying to defend. The ball goes to Ben Duckett at short thirdman, whose return strikes Brook on the back as he looks to take evasive action. But he is alright to continue after the drinks break.

Stokes tries the slower ball -- the low dipping full toss -- as Pant is quite and taps it on the off-side for a single to take his score to 99.

In the next over, Pant completes his century in grand style. He comes down the track and swings Bashir over midwicket for a one-handed six to bring up his seventh Test hundred, from 146 balls.

This is the most centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests, going past Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who had six centuries.

And the celebration is extra-ordinary too, like his knock with a summersault next to the pitch to leave everyone pleasantly surprised at Headingley.

Two balls later, he lofts the spinner straight down the ground and even though he hasn't timed, it goes over long-off for a six.

Another dot followed by a top edged sweep which goes over the fielder at square leg for a single.

India are 426/3 in 100 overs, with Gill on 144 and Pant on 112 as the duo have now put on 205 runs for the fourth wicket from 290 balls.

A few balls later, he rocks back to pull Bashir over square leg for a six as India go past 400, in the 96th over.

Pant also races into the 90s. He again goes for the pull shot but this time along the ground to deep square leg for just a single, to retain strike.

Woakes bowling a lot more closer to the stumps than yesterday. On Day 1, they gave a lot of wide full deliveries which were hit for boundaries but today Woakes is on the off-stump line as he bowls another tidy over, conceding just a single.

Pant easily getting the singles as he clips Carse off his pads to fine leg for a single. Gill pulls the third ball for one and Pant also takes a single off the next.

Gill quick to rock back and punch Carse as he goes a bit wide but Crawley at point comes up with a diving stop to save some runs.

Still no change as Woakes continues. The ball hasn't done much so far on Day 2 as Pant clips Woakes off his pads through square leg for two runs.

The pacer oversteps to concede a no-ball before Pant picks another single off his pads.

Another no-ball from Woakes -- the second of the over -- before Gill plays a late dab fine on the off-side for a boundary as India inch towards 400.

Pant time and again using his feet. This time he gives Carse the charge to swat it behind square on the leg side for a boundary.

No fielder in the slips for England as Pant takes strike against Carse. 'That is the first time I have seen England do this at Headingley,' remarks former pacer Stuart Board on commentary.

Carse makes a good comeback as he beats Pant on the outside edge with a back of length ball angled across.

Carse tries the bouncer but Pant happy to duck under before he taps the next on the leg side.

The next ball is short as Pant ignores it before the next bouncer down the leg side is pulled fine for a four.

He defends the next two balls before he is beaten on the outside edge as he pokes away from his body.

Woakes bowls a tidy over, focussing on the line around the off-stump as Gill watchfully plays out a maiden over.

Cute from Pant as he opens the face of the bat at the last minute to guide Carse past the slips for a four.

He once again skips down the track but Carse bowls a high bouncer which is ruled a wide for height.

Pant clips the pacer to fine leg for a single before Gill gets the bottom edge which goes on the bounce towards the slips.

He cuts the last ball but straight to the fielder at point.

'Gill will score lots of runs in away series if...': Ganguly

Shubman Gill

Mighty impressed with Shubman Gill's footwork in difficult English conditions, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is expecting the young skipper to score truckloads of runs in away conditions if his feet movement remains as impeccable as it was on the opening day of the Test-series opener at Leeds.

Playing his first Test as skipper, Gill conjured up a sublime unbeaten 127 that was packed with glorious drives. India ended the day at a solid 359/3, making the English attack look pedestrian.

The home bowlers largely bowled full and Gill negotiated the challenge with remarkable ease, transferring his weight on the shots for some sublime drives.

"I am so happy to see his feet (movement) away from home, there's a massive improvement in that away from home. Shubman's feet were fantastic, didn't make a mistake," Ganguly told PTI.

"I think England shouldn't have bowled on that wicket and they also didn't bowl well enough. His feet movement was fantastic, I hope it is a permanent thing with him because if he keeps batting like this in England and away conditions, he is going to score a lot of runs," added Ganguly.

The series is being touted as the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket with the Gill-led side travelling without the legendary Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

It is supposed to be a tough transition phase but the start has been magnificent. Ganguly said he was never worried about the smooth transition since India has a lot of talent, thanks to a robust domestic structure.

"I was never worried about Indian cricket. There will be someone taking Indian cricket forward. I am not surprised with Yashasvi (Jaiswal) because I rate him as a fantastic batter, he is someone who should play all formats."

India 359-3 (85 ovs) vs England | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the first Test between England and India at Leeds in Saturday.

The opening day of thes eries was everything India could've hoped for - a steady start after being sent in, a surface that only got better, and commanding centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and debutant captain Shubman Gill.

Jaiswal brought the flair, Gill the composure, and together they took India to a dominant 359/3 at stumps.

The message was clear: India are here to take charge.

For England, it was a day to forget. Ben Stokes' decision to bowl first is under the spotlight - not only for the call, but for the toothless response from his bowlers. While Stokes himself struck twice, the rest of the attack lacked discipline, allowing India to pile on the runs with ease.

As the pitch continues to flatten and India's batters grow bolder, England must find answers quickly - or risk this Test, and the series, slipping away fast.

India will aim to continue their domination with the bat and look for a total in excess of 500, which should put them in pole position of pushing towards victory.
