England bowlers led by Shoaib Bashir inflicted regular blows in the third session but India reached 473 for eight in their first innings at the end of the second day of the fifth Test in Dharamsala on Friday.

Off-spinner Bashir (4/170) and left-arm spinner Tom Hartley (2/126) scythed through India's late middle-order, but the hosts found some late resistance from Kuldeep Yadav (27 batting) and Jasprit Bumrah (19 batting) to stretch the lead to 255 runs.

Before that India batsmen made a merry run as Rohit Sharma (103), Shubman Gill (110) made hundreds while Sarfaraz Khan (56) and debutant Devdutt Padikkal (65) ran England ragged.

The lone point of consolation for England was the sight of their skipper Ben Stokes bowling, a first since last year's Ashes.

Stokes got rid of his opposite number Rohit too to make the occasion memorable.

The hosts lead by 46 runs after bundling out England for a woeful 218 on the first day itself.

With Rohit Sharma (52) and Shubman Gill (26) at the crease, India will look to wipe out the deficit and take a lead.

Earlier on Day 1, India bowled England out for a below-par 218 and cruised to 135-1 in their robust reply to seize early control of the fifth and final test on Thursday.

Kuldeep Yadav wrecked England's top order and fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin polished off the tail to bundle out England in just over two sessions.

India captain Rohit Sharma combined with Yashasvi Jaiswal (57) in an opening stand of 104 to consolidate their position at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Rohit was batting on 52 at stumps with Shubman Gill (26) also looking assured at the other end.
