Sensex zoom 76 pts at 6528

The Sensex opened with a small gain of five points at 6,457 over its previous close. While the index steadily inched past the 6,500-mark in mid-morning trades, profit-taking in select counters trimmed the gains and the market displayed a positive, range-bound trend till early noon trades.

The market-mood firmed up by mid-noon trades as frenzied buying in most of the old and new economy stocks propelled the gains of the index to an intra-day high of 6,532 - up 80 points over the last close of 6,452.

The Sensex finally settled the session with a firm gain of 76 points at 6,528.

The Nifty ended above the 2,000-mark at 2,012 - up 24 points.

The market breadth was firm. While 1,388 stocks advanced, 581 declined and 64 stocks remained unchanged on the BSE.

Infosys, with a volume of over 2.84 lakh, spurted 2.23% (Rs 45) to Rs 2,077, and Satyam added 1.45% (Rs 6) to Rs 430. Wipro notched up 3.64% gains (Rs 23) to Rs 659.

Bajaj soared 4.89% (Rs 56) to Rs 1,194. While Maruti, on volumes of over 6.60 lakh, advanced 4.41% (Rs 19) to Rs 454, Tata Motors jumped 3.55% (Rs 15) to Rs 448. Hero Honda added 1.34% (Rs 7) to Rs 553.

ONGC moved up 1.33% (Rs 12) to Rs 890. While Reliance was up a per cent (Rs 4) at Rs 540, ITC also ended with a steady gain of Rs 8 at Rs 1,488.

SBI, which registered a volume of over 6.88 lakh, firmed up 2.12% (Rs 13) to Rs 633. While HDFC Bank clocked a per cent gain (Rs 5) to Rs 538, ICICI Bank ended with a small gain of Rs 2 at Rs 396.

BHEL shot up 3.11% (Rs 26) to Rs 861, and Bharti scaled up 2.83% (Rs 6) to Rs 222. While Tisco was up a per cent (Rs 3) at Rs 363, Zee, however, declined 2.38% (Rs 4) to Rs 154. The counter clocked a huge volume of over 2.12 crore on the BSE.

Dr Reddy's gained 1.44% (Rs 10) to Rs 675. Ranbaxy and Cipla were down a per cent each at Rs 973 (down Rs 9) and Rs 280 (down Rs 2), respectively.

Grasim (down Rs 9 to Rs 1,136) and Gujarat Ambuja (down Rs 2 to Rs 442) were down a per cent each. ACC ended a tad lower at Rs 391.

Metal scrips attracted considerable buying support. Souther Iron & Steel scaled up 9.76% (Rs 3) to Rs 29. While Navbharat Ferous flared up 8.39% (Rs 32) to Rs 413, Uttam Galva surged 4.93% (Rs 3) to Rs 54. Ispat shot up 2.93% to Rs 23.

Select auto counters, however, witnessed sharp selling pressure. Shanthi Gears tumbled 11.20% (Rs 6) to Rs 51. While Rane Brakes plunged 6.96% (Rs 17) to Rs 230, Munjal Auto lost 3.16% (Rs 5) to Rs 163. Rane Engine and Motherson Sumi were down nearly 3% each at Rs 430 and Rs 66, respectively.

The BSE Auto index was the major gainer among the sectoral indices and moved up 2.66% (up 72 pts) to 2,796, followed by BSE CG (up 1.81% to 3,531), BSE IT (up 1.75% to 2,535) and BSE Teck (up 1.71% to 1,673), respectively.

Reliance led the value chart with a turnover of Rs 65 crore, followed by Infosys (Rs 57 crore), Maruti (Rs 53 crore) and SBI (Rs 43 crore), respectively.
