Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana smashed the world record to win the Olympic 10,000 metres title on Friday, blowing away the competition in one of the greatest ever long-distance races at the Games.
Usain Bolt delivered. Mo Farah, Elaine Thompson, David Rudisha, three world records and a dominant United States played their part too, as athletics enjoyed being back in the limelight.
Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana was supposed to be enjoying a glorious Olympic debut after shattering the women's 10,000 metres world record last week but the occasion was somewhat marred by immediate questions about whether she was clean.
