The Government's ambitious unique identity project aiming to give a 16-digit number to all citizens of the country was renamed 'AADHAAR' and its new logo unveiled.

The government has earmarked Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) to establish 'a comprehensive system of unique identity for the resident population of the country'. The project will focus on border areas with illegal immigration in mind. It will also facilitate speedy and efficient transactions between individuals and service providers.
A draft bill on the Unique Identity Project would be made public within the next one month, chairman of UIDAI Nandan Nilekani said on Tuesday. "We need an Act to govern a regulatory body like UIDAI. The draft of the Act will be put for public discussion in the next four weeks," he told reporters on the sidelines of a Confederation of Indian Industries function in New Delhi.
UID project was launched by the UPA government in 2009.
So far, 758 million Aadhaar numbers have been generated.
